A VINELink search works best when it is treated as a one-person status check. Names can be shared by more than one person, and custody can move from county jail to state prison or another agency. Confirm identity by more than one field when the system shows them.

1. Open VINELink for Alabama or the Alabama VNS site if the person is an ADOC-sentenced offender.
2. Search by the person's name or available identifying number where the interface allows.
3. Compare the result by name, agency, location, age or date of birth if shown, and custody details.
4. Read the custody status and reporting agency before treating a result as a Colbert County release.
5. If no match appears, use the correct custodian: sheriff for county jail, ADOC for state prison, BOP for federal custody, or ICE for immigration custody.

Colbert County VNS Caveat

The Colbert-specific notification issue is the county-versus-state line. Alabama VNS says the tool is only for offenders convicted in Alabama and sentenced to prison, which means ADOC custody. It also directs questions about cases that have not yet gone to trial to the sheriff in the county where the crime occurred. For Colbert County, that means the sheriff's 48-hour release roster and jail records remain the county jail source.

This caveat prevents a common mistake. A missing VNS result does not prove there was no Colbert County jail release. It may mean the person was a pretrial detainee, a municipal jail detainee, outside ADOC scope, or listed under another custodian. Start with the local jail release feed for county custody, then move to VINE or VNS when the record type fits.

ADOC and Colbert Release Checks

ADOC matters when a Colbert County case becomes a state-prison sentence. The ADOC inmate search uses AIS number, first name, and last name fields, and ADOC states that AIS takes precedence over name fields. It also states that the online database contains currently incarcerated inmates and that historical data is not available online.

That current-only limit is important for VINELink use. If a person already left ADOC custody, the public ADOC search may not show historical release data. The next path may be ADOC Central Records, Alabama VINE/VNS, ABPP records for parole matters, or the court record. Do not use ADOC absence alone as a release date.
